Despite a tweet last night declaring that he was entering the transfer portal, Florida offensive lineman Micah Mazzccua has not left the team, and plans to attempt to “make it work” at Florida, according to sources.
“Appreciate coach Napier and his staff but I feel it’s best for me to put myself back in the portal,” Mazzccua tweeted.
The tweet, sent around 7:30pm Thursday evening, was said to have “blindsided” the Florida staff, per sources. Those sources say he has since spoken with the Florida staff about it, and both sides are making a good-faith attempt to rectify the issue. No indication was given to me about the chances it does or doesn’t work out.
Mazzccua transferred to Florida just a few weeks ago from Baylor, and was thought to be one of many important additions to the Gators’ offensive line. He impressed coaches and players alike in the one week of spring practice he went through. Just days ago, Florida strength coach Mark Hocke praised him as a “bare-knuckle brawler.” However, he was not present at practice on Thursday prior to sending the stunning tweet.
Part of the problem with Mazzccua’s tweet was that the transfer portal isn’t even open right now. The portal will re-open on April 15 for a period of fifteen days, closing again on April 30. The other issue with transferring would be Mazzccua’s eligibility. Because Micah Mazzccua already burned his one-time free transfer to leave Baylor and come to Florida, he would not immediately be eligible to play in 2023 and would have to sit out a year.
Mazzccua also posted another puzzling tweet early yesterday morning at 6:43am. It was a much simpler tweet, consisting only of the “peace” emoji, which one could logically assume was foreshadowing his more drawn-out, since-deleted departure notice.
At least for now, Micah Mazzccua remains on the roster.
