Just as things are getting back into full swing for the Gator football team, things are heating up on the recruiting trail, too.
Florida has nabbed a commitment from 2022 athlete Sam McCall, a consensus five star recruit from Lakeland, FL/Lake Gibson HS. He chose Florida over Alabama, and also had offers from Oklahoma, West Virginia, Penn State, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, South Carolina and FSU- a solid offer list for a guy who’s just started his junior year of high school. The commitment makes sense; McCall attended Florida’s Junior Day on March 7, has a great relationship with Torrian Gray and wanted to stay closer to home.
That makes two commitments for Florida in three days. The Gators also landed 2021 defensive end Jeremiah “Scooby” Williams on Monday.
Though McCall is technically labeled as an “ATH” by recruiting services thanks to his background in basketball and his appearances on both sides of the ball, he best projects as a safety at the next level- and quite a good one at that. He’s got great ball skills and is excellent in zone coverage thanks to great play-recognition abilities, instincts and speed. He’s definitely adequate as a tackler, although scouts warn that’s something he will need to improve on in order to play at the collegiate level. Because he’s still a junior, he’s still got time and room to fill out his frame- and once he does, assuming he continues to come along, he could be an instant set-and-forget piece at safety as a true freshman depending on who else is back there and healthy.
It’s way too early to get a read on the Gators’ 2022 class- it’s now got a grant total of two commitments- but adding Sam McCall was a very nice start.
