UPDATE: as we feared, Cam Carroll suffered a knee injury that will cost him the 2023 season.
(Original story begins below.)
The leg of Florida running back Cam Carroll was severely injured in a scrimmage and while the extent of the injury is currently unknown, Florida is fearing the worst, according to multiple sources.
Carroll went down during the scrimmage and was unable to move, requiring a cart to come out and carry him off the field. His nearby teammates all seemed to grasp the severity of the situation immediately and surrounded him, encouraging him until he was carted off the field.
Cam Carroll was expected to see a solid role in 2023, even knowing that he’d enter the season third in the pecking order for carries behind returning running backs Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne. After transferring in from Tulane, Carroll came into camp and quickly earned his teammates’ and coaches’ respect with his work ethic and how quickly he picked up the Florida offense. So this is a brutal twist of fate for a kid who’s done all the right things this offseason- and it’s made all the more brutal given his history of injuries at Tulane.
As it stands now, Florida’s top two at the running back position remains unchanged, but assuming this is indeed a long-term injury, this is a horrible blow in terms of depth at the position.
As this is a developing story, more information will be released as it becomes available. Billy Napier is expected to address the media on Saturday, so if there’s an update on Carroll’s status, it might be relayed to the public then.
In the meantime, all the best to Cam Carroll, and we certainly hope this isn’t as terrible as it sounded.
