Florida’s basketball team just picked up a tremendous “look at me” 88-71 victory over 9th ranked West Virginia. But it’s not the only win the Gator Nation experienced today.
As first reported by FOX Sports, Florida offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier will be back with the Gator football team next year. Nussmeier was considered a strong candidate for the head coaching job at Southern Miss, but turned it down.
Nussmeier is almost certain to leave for a head coaching job at some point, as he’s considered a hot coaching commodity. It’s just that USM wasn’t the right job for him, and that he’s waiting for that right job to open up. But realistically speaking, Jim McElwain shouldn’t be counting on keeping him for all that long.
Nevertheless, it’s always a good thing to have some continuity on your coaching staff, particularly with your coordinators, for as long as you can. Given how assistants are always trying to climb up the ranks and become head coaches, it’s never very realistic to expect a good coordinator to stay for very long, and if Doug Nussmeier does leave after this coming year, his two year career at Florida will have been about the norm.
So, you know. Just an overall great day for the Gator faithful. And it’s only 3:30 in the afternoon.
