Dan Mullen has done an excellent job in the short time he’s been in Gainesville to stack up on his Class of 2018. Today, he took a break, went back and retroactively added one of the biggest recruits of the Class of 2017 to his program.
Ohio State freshman wideout Trevon Grimes (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) has transferred to Florida. Grimes has been pegged as likely to transfer since the middle of October, when he took a personal leave of absence from the Buckeyes. His choice of Florida allows him to reunite with former Aquinas teammate Jake Allen and to be much closer to his family than Columbus. Because of his unique circumstances, he has applied for a hardship waiver that requests that the NCAA allow him to be eligible in 2018. Whether or not it’s approved won’t be determined for a few weeks or months.
Coming out of high school, Grimes was a five star recruit with offers from pretty much everybody, including Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, FSU, Georgia, Oklahoma and LSU. Perhaps his 4.47 40 time, quick feet, crisp route running and tremendous ball skills had something to do with that. Grimes possesses every single physical skill you can expect a top college playmaking wide receiver to have, and is universally known as a tough competitor to boot. When Ohio State poached him out of South Florida, it sent proverbial shockwaves throughout the recruiting world.
Grimes only played in mop up moments against Army and UNLV, and caught three passes for 20 yards in the limited action he saw with the Buckeyes. But with far less competition for him to wade through en route to playing time in Gainesville, he could make an immediate- and tremendous- impact.
