Florida, um, survived a scare from Kentucky to start the Jim McElwain era 3-0. Here are some of the notable takeaways from the game:
It was over when… Quincy Wilson picked off Patrick Towles’ desperation heave on fourth and Mogadishu to go with under a minute remaining.
Play of the game… The play before Wilson’s pick, Gator lineman Jon Bullard sacked Towles for a gigantic loss to land a crippling blow to the Cats’ last ditch drive.
Game ball goes to… Alex McCalister, who was everywhere on this night. He recorded two sacks and led a Gator front that harassed Towles all night.
Stat of the game… 29. Florida has now beaten Kentucky 29 times in succession. This is by far the longest active winning streak by one team over another team in college football (Texas A&M’s 24 game streak over Texas Christian is second longest).
What to be proud of… Florida’s defense bent, but never broke, slamming the door shut with the aforementioned pair of big plays (Bullard sack and Wilson interception). They also kept an opponent out of the end zone for the first time this year.
What to work on… Will Grier wasn’t bad, leading the Gators on touchdown drives in each of the first two quarters, but he could have been a lot better at the same time, throwing a costly interception in the end zone. His offensive line could pitch in and make things easier, of course, but this passing game needs a lot of work if the Gators are to compete for a trip to Atlanta.
Bottom line: Florida won a game on the road in the SEC. That’s a big deal. Regardless of the opponent or the winning streak you have over them.
