Florida, um, survived a scare from Kentucky to start the Jim McElwain era 4-0. Here are some of the notable takeaways from the game:
It was over when… Aaron Medley’s 55 yard field goal sailed wide right as time expired.
Play of the game… Is there any doubt? On 4th and 14 down six with 1:30 to go, Will Grier hit Antonio Callaway on the right sideline, and Callaway took it the distance in a play that elicited a little more emotion than you can tell from this sentence.
Game ball goes to… Grier. 23/42, 283 yards, 2 touchdowns and an interception. Honorable mention goes to Brandon Powell for his huge block on the Callaway touchdown.
Stat of the game… 11. #11essee. Diehard fans will get the joke.
What to be proud of… Florida’s offense was horrible throughout the game, but came through when it was needed most. And hell, not many teams could come back down 13 points with 5 minutes to go and win.
What to work on… Um, a lot. Florida’s defenders missed a slew of tackles and the offensive line ranged from horrid to “get them off of scholarship”. But in both cases, a lot of those guys are young, and they’ll grow. They just… need to do it.
Bottom line: Florida won a game it had no business winning, truth be told. But hey, a win is a win. Just ask Butch Jones.
