Scott Stricklin wasn’t messing around when he said Florida was going to bolster its non conference football schedule.
In a landmark move, Florida has announced the biggest non conference home-and-home football series since the early 1980’s. On September 7, 2030, the Gators will host the Texas Longhorns in Gainesville. One year minus one day later, Florida will pay a return visit to Austin.
It’s the second home and home with a Power Five opponent Florida has announced this week. Two days ago, the Gators unveiled a home and home series with the Pac-12’s Colorado Buffaloes.
This one is far more exciting. These are two name brand programs, and the flag carriers of two of the most talent rich states in America, so it would only be right for them to face off every so often. And it’s big news that they are, of course, because the Gators have long cited the grueling SEC schedule plus FSU as the reason for not scheduling these types of games.
The two schools have played a grand total of three times, all prior to World War II. The schools first squared off in 1924, tying 7-7 in Austin, before playing a home and home in 1939 and 1940. Texas won both.
