July 7, 2022, might be a day that Billy Napier never forgets. Minutes after his Florida staff snagged a commitment from four star QB Marcus Stokes, the Gators landed a second monster commitment- this time from Treyan Webb, a four star running back out of Jacksonville.
If the last name sounds familiar, it should. Webb’s cousin, Dee, was a cornerback for the Gators from 2003 through 2005. Today, Dee passed the torch down to his cousin, following much speculation as to whether this would happen or not.
Get ready for this offer list, because it’s a doozy. Among the dozens of schools to offer Treyaun Webb a scholarship: Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Oregon, Texas, Penn State, Auburn, Utah, Pittsburgh, Mississippi, Baylor, FSU, Michigan State, Arizona State, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Ohio State… well, you probably get the point. The four star ranking beside his name be damned; pretty much every school in Division I thought enough of Treyaun Webb to offer him a scholarship.
His tape might have something to do with why. Treyaun Webb shows a little bit of everything on his high school film. He’s got tremendous vision and a quick burst, finding the hole quickly and then zooming right through it. Webb also demonstrates an impressive level of elusiveness, frequently making people miss with anything from a lateral juke to a spin move, and even shows an occasional stiff-arm.
Most impressively, though not quite big enough to be worthy of the “power back” label, Webb runs hard and angry, in a vein somewhat similar to Dameon Pierce. The speed isn’t what I would call elite, but it’s more than good enough for him to be able to win the race to the corner and even some long-distance footraces.
Even more importantly than that, Webb looks to be an excellent “one cut and go” runner, making quick and correct decisions about when to be patient and wait for a hole and when to put his foot in the ground and go forward- possibly the most critical trait for a running back to have beyond ball security (which is something else that Webb does well).
We’ll have to get Treyaun Webb on campus to see how he does as a pass catcher and a blocker, but scouts say that, at least on air, he’s pretty solid in both areas. If he’s able to perform both pass-catching and blocking duties at the collegiate level, and grow into his frame a little bit more, he can develop into an elite all-around running back.
Adding onto the euphoria of simply landing him, Webb’s commitment was somewhat of a shock, too. He was showing a lot of interest in Penn State- where Stokes was committed- and was expected to announce his decision on Monday. But perhaps working in tandem with Stokes on this, he pulled the trigger four days before he was expected to.
The addition of Webb means Florida has now landed six commitments in the past sixteen days, and three in the last four days. All six commitments are of consensus four-star caliber.
