The bad news just keeps coming, though this one seems far worse than it really is.
The Gainesville Sun reported that Florida QB Skyler Mornhinweg and defensive lineman Gerald Willis got into a fight yesterday. University Police responded to a report that Mornhinweg and Willis were fighting at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, and when they got there, only one of the players was still there (the GS report did not say which player). Each of them refused to press charges against each other, meaning that nothing bad (meaning suspensions) will come out of this. A source later told 247sports that the fight resulted from a misunderstanding between the two teammates.
UPDATE 3:41ET: The fight originated over a pair of cleats. Mornhinweg told a campus policeman that he couldn’t find his cleats, and that he later found them in Willis’s locker. He approached Willis and the two quickly became physical. Willis told police that he initiated the physicality by pushing Mornhinweg, who threw the first punch. Willis responded with a punch to Mornhinweg’s mouth, sending him to the hospital for a cut lip.
It’s definitely not the prettiest thing to see, especially not after the mini-brawl back in summer workouts that saw Vernon Hargreaves limp off the field and Gator nation subsequently hold their breath. The whole thing comes a day after reports surfaced that Treon Harris sexually assaulted another student (which a source has told me he doubts happened), which makes it even less pleasing to see.
Mornhinweg may be next in line for the QB position on Saturday if Jeff Driskel struggles. Will Grier just returned to practice (back spasms), so I’d be surprised if he got the call as the backup unless he really impresses during practice this week. Willis, on the other hand, was suspended for the Kentucky and Alabama games for disciplinary reasons.
